Publication on the Corrosion of Bell Bronze
PRESENTATION
The chapter of the book titled “Deterioration of Bell Bronze: An Artistic and Acoustic Heritage in Danger?” demonstrates the value of an investigation using materials science to safeguard, preserve, and restore the heritage of bells. Through an original methodological approach led by the ANR BellACorr project, it presents the reader with a scientific laboratory study aimed at determining the origins and mechanisms of deterioration in bells—often monumental objects of communication and vessels of a millennia-old societal history, encompassing industrial, cultural, and religious dimensions. This chapter also illustrates the full multidisciplinary potential of the study of bells and chimes. Indeed, in the book *Tintinnabula: Bells and Chimes from Antiquity to the 21st Century*, edited by Arnaud Saura-Ziegelmeyer, it combines an archaeological approach to these objects with an exploration of their sacred and literary contexts, while also examining their musical production. The book, comprising the proceedings of the international symposium “Tintinnabula, Bells and Chimes. Current Issues in Campanology, from Antiquity to the 21st Century,” held on March 6 and 7, 2025, at the Musée d’Art Campanaire in L’Isle-Jourdain (32), was published with the support of the University Press of the Catholic Institute of Toulouse and the Patrimoine Littérature Histoire (PLH) laboratory at the University of Toulouse – Jean Jaurès.
